Top 10 reasons why India’s $35 tablet PC outshines rivals

India has unveiled its $35 tablet computer called “Aakash” after two years of combined efforts by the education ministry in collaboration with the tablet PC makers in Canada and the United Kingdom.
The Union Minister for Human Resource Development and Communications and Information Technology, Shri Kapil Sibal launching the “Aakash Low Cost Access Device (LCAD)”, in New Delhi on October 05, 2011. The Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr. (Smt.) D. Purandeswari is also seen.
At a time when similar tablet PCs are available nowhere for less than $200 unless they are sold like HP touchpad as a last means to exit the market, India has roped in niche manufacturers to develop one for students and bridge the wide gap between rural and city education systems in the country.
The result was beyond expectations but not without initial ridicule when Indian minister Kapil Sibal announced it initially last year. Industry bigwigs termed it a cheap alternative being forced on the market but took solace when the government said that it was meant for the students and being subsidized substantially.
Now that the product is ready both for students and in retail market at $35 (with $15 being borne by the government) while the retail version will be made available for $60 soon.
Here are some features which make it a far superior product manufactured by DataWind, a UK-based company.
– The tablet will sport a 7-inch touchscreen display with 800×480 pixel resolution, 256MB of RAM, two USB drives, a 2GB SD memory card and a 32 GB expandable memory slot.
– The processor’s capacity is 366 Mhz with Graphics accelerator and also HD Video processor.
– It will run on Google’s Android platform. Other features include PDF reader, video conferencing facilities and multi content viewer.
– It will have connectivity and networking with WiFi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g and its battery will last 180 minutes and the adapter will come in 200-240 volt range that is used in India.
So, the question is what it does not have…
Apple's iPad 2 tablet
– Compared with $499 iPad 2, it lags behind in terms of display. iPad 2 has a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display, a dual core A5 CPU, with more memory, and two new cameras.
– With 512MB of RAM in the iPad2, on the wireless front, it has a WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n) in a standard model or a Verizon 3G version, or an iPad of the AT&T / GSM variety.
– Bluetooth 2.1+EDR is on board, as is an AGPS chip in the 3G versions.
– All the iPad 2 models come equipped with an ambient light sensor, an accelerometer, and a three-axis gyroscope.
Now, it is clear what the students would like to have and what the government would like to give them. Aakash is much cheaper and affordable for many millions of Indians. It makes sense to sell it to more than confining it to brand-crazy few.

Is any of you received akash ubislate 7+? if so, kindly help me that what is the performance? is it has blue tooth, rj45 connector? can we surfe internet by using mobile phone like nokia 5230? what is the speed? my mob no. is 08900410300. However I have some knoledge of computer but it is a newer thing so I have no idea about it.

Chor Company hai.I paid Rs.2999/-in month of March-2012.But till today i am not recived device.On mail came from chor company that your order is under process you will get your device in 15 to 20 days.
Now send request to refund my money.same reply from chor company that your payment is under process.As soon as done payment we will inform you.So my request to all people not to done payment this chor company in advance.

i got my tablet 2 days back,, charged it for some 3 hrs as soon as i got it.. then next day used it for 20-25 minutes ,, and started it warming up immediately .. and all the more its not starting up only.. i tried to recharge it again,, then tried to start,, but still it does not respond. sometime aftr presing the start buton, the screen becomes complete red, and again goes off.. please suggest what should i do ,…????

I agree with you that Mr. Kapil Sibal is responsible for this. i have also booked TAB in hte month of Month of March 2012 with full payment, but still waiting for response from thier side.

I think this company is just taking the order and after some times only sending the mail that we have newer version of the tablet and book the newer version of tablet and send the money.
So we are really happy and best of luck for giving the newer version of tablet.
But the conern is timing. Now it is more than six months and still we are not getting the tablet.
So any solution or any higher management is taking of this or not.

I ordered in Feb/Mar ’12 If persons who booked in Dec’11 are yet to get units where do I stand!
I have not lost hope and I am sure Data-Wind will live upto their promise.nad Not just letting wind/Gas-In Mr Kushwant Singh language!!
The guys are under lod of orders Similar case in 1999 when Indica came out-First Indian car for Indians
we got with many problems but attended by Tata
Trust Data wind will not make us run from pillar to post as we all will be out of Wind-and Data wind should not walk to banks with laugh and smile!!
Data Wind do not let down Indians who have laid faith on you-Be Like Tata Motors–All the best-
